Yes speech recognition software can be of great use for some people. More specifically, people who tend to do alot of writing on the pc. However, it just isn't practical for some people like myself, as speech recognition and programming just don't go togehter, for example, try to tell the computer to type:

This has been suggested to me... and by a doctor who happens to be my best friend. Only I know that he's tried the voice recognition on some of his dictations and often the mistakes it makes are very comical. So it takes him twice as much time fixing it as just typing it out the first time. :-) I can see how it would be great for numb wrists, though, if it can be "trained" to actually hear what you're saying.

one of my friend suffers from RSI .his work comprises of regularly using a keyboard or mouse for intensive and long periods. his employer provided him with speech recognition software and it has become relatively easier for him to do his desk work as he doesnt have to type that much now.

Speech recognition software hasn't been developed to its maximum potential yet although it won't probably be too useful in a GIS/CAD environment either or for folks who ain't real talkers like me. Besides, there may be complains of RSIs for tongues later. :D Maybe scientists can come up with thought recognition software. :)

till now the scientists have not come out with a speech recognition software that can work perfectly, except for couple of ones which work fine to come extent like dragon and phillips. leave alone thought recognition software. one can well imagine as to how much time that is going to take .

Leaps and bounds have been made in the voice recognition software sector. However as Karl mentioned, for certain careers it would be useless to use, especially when programming you have to move between multiple scripts which would really nullify the benefit you get from using the voice recognition software as you would have to use your hands constantly anyway!

I have to agree with you on that one. Plus along with that, i don't think the program is so high tech that it'll understand every word you give it. Kinda hard to master it.

and as people living in different countries have different accent, it will be even tougher for the software to make out as to what the person is saying. it has to be much more sensitive to words than it is at present.

I read that despite their popularity, soft gel wrist support pads are NOT recommended as they press into the soft part of the wrist and put further pressure on the tendons and may also restrict blood flow to the hand.I have a mouse pad that has one of these built in. I could never get used to it so I turn it sideways.I never use a wrist support while typing.

I've been typing for a long time, and I've never (knock on wood, as I knock on my computer desk..) really noticed any need for any wrist support. I've always thought it was more the use of the mouse and the clicking that caused problems for people. (As I mentioned somewhere else, my big problem - although it may not yet be an "official" injury - is a chronic, back-of-the-shoulder/neck problem.)

I also dont understand how it is necessary to acquire a wrist support, most of the work i perform includes alot of time on the computer typing, and i have yet to to experience any RSI (okay maybe eye strains). But i think its because i use more or a laptop than a desktop, or doesnt this make a difference?

I think I just had a ta da moment. I notice that my symptoms are worse when I use my desktop. maybe it does have something to do with the built in wrist support on my laptop. I think I will be adding a cushy wrist support to my desktop keyboard!
