View Full Version : Physiotherapy... Don't Lift Weights!

I was just reading an article that mentioned physiotherapy. While some forms of it may give relief, actual weight lifting will most likely make it worse, so beware if you're trying various "strengthening" approaches.
Hmm, I do weight lighting a 2-3 times a week. I hope this is not contributing to my RSI, I'd hate to have to go it up. Being a regular computer user the weight lifting is one of my ways to keep myself healthy, I enjoy it, and it's good for me (or so I thought!).

Is it strength training or the body-building kind of weight lifting? I'm not an expert on this but strength training improves muscle tone and strengthen ligaments and joints so it might actually help us prevent or lessen RSI.
Yeh I would say it was strength training. I don't push myself to really heavy weights, I have just a weight I'm happy with and I've been lifting the same weights for about a year now. I imagine body builders are continously pushing themselves to life heavier weights.
As for whether or not it is helping my RSI, I have no idea. Some times I do think all that weight on my wrists cannot be good for me, but with that said, I'm stubburn and I'm not gunna give into RSI that easy! :)

I've read that regular aerobic exercise can improve blood flow, which can help.

I wonder if wearing some sort of brace or other device would help while weight lifting. I would also have to agree that strength training may either help or at least do the least amount of damage. Of course i don't know a lot about weight lifting, I'm only going by what I've read.
i guess with weight lifting, we are gain putting extra pressure on those points which get a high amount of beating while we do computer work. as far as i think,its only going to aggravate the situation.

Weight training isn't on the list so I guess it's only for preventing RSI. When we already have RSI on a particular joint or muscle, it might not be good to strain the particular area. I also came across an article where it says body building exercises is definitely not good for RSI sufferers.

I guess the bottom line is that for all the places and doctors I can find that will say it's bad for RSI, someone else will find sites that say it's good. This is a relatively new thing at least the kind that comes from computer use and it wasn't a problem 15 years ago when many doctors were in med school, so there's disagreement.
In your case, Karl, I'd strongly suggest (after seeing your doc) giving yourself a rest for a little while to make *sure* it's not making your RSI worse. That's all... take two ibuprofine and some chocolate and call me in the morning. :-)

From what I understand, over-developed and under-developed both place people at higher risk of RSI. Over-developed muscles are not as flexible, so that's the problem with them.
