Below is a list of common tips to prevent RSI.



The causes of RSI is more closely defined as occupational overuse syndrome. Thus, taking frequent breaks from your activities that cause you RSI - such as computer related RSI, would be greatly beneficial in relieving your symptoms.
Wrist pain and hand pain can be ameliorated by introducing some basic techniques in to your day. This may include such techniques as for wrist pain, moving your hands in a circular motion. Just remember that this should be a different type of movement to the regular movement of your hands. Therefore, if it is computed related RSI from using a mouse, the circular motion would be ideal.
Try switching over to an ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/productdetails.aspx?pid=043) have started introducing ergonomic keyboards into their arsenal and so you may wish to take a look at that for relieving forearm and wrist pain.
Wrist supports can be also be another invaluable introduction to your setup. These are brilliant at alleviating wrist pain.
As well as the aforementioned movement of the hands, stretching is a great technique to allow your joints to move in ways they are not normally acquainted to moving. If you apply any of these tips to prevent RSI in to your day, stretching and movements of the hands are key to preventing RSI.
Last of all, you should always warm-up your joints before getting down to any frequent activities that may be the causes of RSI. A simple 10 minute warm up before using the computer or strumming on your guitar could well make the day a whole lot better RSI wise!



I hope this list of tips to prevent RSI is helpful to some people. It has helped me alleviate a lot of the pain I used to suffer at the hands of RSI (No pun intended). I'm sure it will do the same for you, too!

Good list here. I had never thought of a warmup for my hands/wrists like I do for other muscles before exercising, but it makes a lot of sense and I should remember that each morning before I start at the keyboard for the day.

I've read that people should drink plenty of water (before they get thirsty) because water helps muscles in a couple of diffent ways. Essentially, it helps them stay healthy.

I've never heard this in relation to strain injuries... but I drink a LOT of water and it didn't seem to do anything for me since I still have the wrist problem. :-)

From what I understand, drinking lots of water helps provide the body with what it needs for the muscle fibers to get re-lubricated. Part of the problem with RSI is that the repeated use of the muscles without giving the fibers a chance to get re-lubricated is what starts the whole injury process.

Having said that, I have to say I don't have an explanation for your wrist problem in spite of the water drinking. :) Maybe your problem would have been even worse if you hadn't been drinking all that water? Maybe there's a point where a person uses muscles/tendons so much even gallons of water aren't enough? In all seriousness, I suppose its like most medical things - there's a set of things that all have to be just right (rather than just one)in order to prevent negative consequences.

After undergoing a radical hysterectomy a few months back, I was forced to drink tons of water and my symptoms did actually subside a bit. I think a lot of RSI pain has to do with swelling and without water we swell!

Having said that, I have to say I don't have an explanation for your wrist problem in spite of the water drinking. :) Maybe your problem would have been even worse if you hadn't been drinking all that water?

Hehe Well you have a point there and you may be right. I'm not sure what's
worse than "totally cold numb" but I can guarantee that I don't want to be finding out. :-)
